Blueberries

Grow your own!

Blueberries aren’t just a great fruiting plant, but they are also an attractive addition to your overall landscape, offering scarlet fall foliage and creamy white bell shaped flowers. The berries are high in nutrients, antioxidents, fibre and vitamins. We offer several varieties to choose from and by following a few tips, you can be harvesting your own plump fresh fruit each year.

  • Choose the best variety for your situation. High bush varieties such as Blue Ray, Blue Crop and Northland are large and will eventually grow over 3’ tall. Our Half High variety, Polaris is a little more compact. Low bush varieties include Top Hat and the popular Bushel and Berry varieties such as Jelly Bean and Peach Sorbet. These varieties are bred for both their ornamental features and fruit production and can easily be grown in a container or in the ground.
  • Blueberries are partially self fertile, so you will harvest more and larger berries by planting 2 or more varieties together.
  • Blueberries thrive in acidic soil. Add organic material such as compost, peat moss, pine bark and needles to your soil to lower the pH. Getting a soil test is key if you are really serious and you may need to add aluminium sulphate to the soil to lower the pH to between 4.0 and 5.0
  • Birds, deer and rabbits also like Blueberries, so protection is key for a good crop

Try a few bushes and see if they work for you!
